ExxonMobil is committed to operational excellence in all we do including continuous efforts to improve environmental performance. Governance of environmental matters is overseen by Corporate directors and our comprehensive Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) provides the framework for our top-notch environmental management system that helps prevent all types of incidents. As a result of our efforts, our environmental performance continues to improve.

OIMS is ExxonMobil's system that ensures environmental considerations are addressed in all our operations. OIMS has become a respected benchmark approach for incident prevention. Lloyd's Register of Quality Assurance (LRQA) attests that OIMS meets the intent and requirements of ISO 14001 (the recognised international standard for environmental management systems). LRQA also found "ExxonMobil to be among the industry leaders in the extent to which environmental management considerations have been integrated into ongoing business practices".

We built into OIMS a culture of continuous improvement to make our environmental protection programmes even stronger. We are currently strengthening systems to further integrate environmental planning into long-range business decision-making. Find out more about Lloyd's attestation.

We are committed to improve our accident prevention and incident response capabilities. Should an incident occur, our emergency response network would mobilise the appropriate resources. For spill response, we would capitalise on a worldwide network of oil spill cooperatives that we helped to establish and fund.

We would also utilise our stockpile of emergency response equipment. Research efforts on dispersant and bioremediation techniques have expanded our abilities to reduce the impact of oil spills and speed recovery of impacted environments. Learn more about our Oil Spill Response Preparedness.

A responsible environmental approach involves much more than responding to accidents. Our scientists and engineers develop and apply technologies to continually reduce the impacts of our operations and products in many environmental media: air, water, and land. We apply these technologies to our own facilities and, in some cases, license them for broad application.

Our strong focus on energy efficiency has helped reduce air emissions and is expected to continue to reduce pollutants per unit of production. ExxonMobil's Global Energy Management System is an approach that has identified opportunities to reduce energy use and operating costs at refineries and chemical plants.

In Singapore, our cogeneration facility on Jurong Island can supply 155 megawatts of electricity and substantially reduces carbon dioxide emissions from what they would otherwise be using conventional electricity generation.

We continue pacesetter performance in limiting the number of spills from marine operations. Several outside organisations have recognised ExxonMobil facilities with recent awards for outstanding environmental management and performance.
