Helping kids make it to school

March 20, 2008
Transport bursaries worth $30,000 were recently presented to 250 needy students under an assistance programme sponsored by ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.
At a ceremony on March 20, the children from 74 schools each received $120, which would pay for about 40 percent of their estimated yearly transport expenditure to and from school.
The bursaries were presented by Dr. Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. The presentation ceremony was sponsored by the South West Community Development Council (CDC).
Said Ms. Stella Law, a teacher at Bukit Batok Secondary School: “It is heartwarming to know that ExxonMobil is willing to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate in the community. Hopefully, this gracious act will lead to even more companies coming in to assist those in need. Thank you ExxonMobil!”
"ExxonMobil has been very active in its community outreach efforts to uplift the lives of the less fortunate in the community. It is indeed heart-warming to see their long-term commitment to the South West District community. This programme is already in its sixth year!" – Dr. Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources
This is the sixth year that the South West CDC is working with ExxonMobil to help school-going children from needy families within the South West District. The programme started as a meals bursary in 2003, but it became a transport bursary in 2006 when the Ministry of Education started to provide funds for meals assistance that year. More than 880 students have been assisted with over $150,000 since the bursary was started.
