New Singapore diesel hydrotreater project to boost ultra low sulfur diesel supply
SINGAPORE - ExxonMobil today announced its plans to build a diesel hydrotreater at its Singapore refinery, increasing the refinery’s production capacity of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. This follows the recent announcement of the completion of similar projects in the United States, and further demonstrates ExxonMobil’s commitment to disciplined refinery investment.
“The decision to move forward with the engineering and construction of the diesel hydrotreater at our Singapore refinery reflects both the increasing demand for diesel fuel in the region and ExxonMobil’s confidence in Singapore's business climate,” said Chris Erickson, vice president for planning & project execution, ExxonMobil Refining & Supply.
Kwa Chong Seng, chairman and managing director, ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, said: “This diesel hydrotreater is just the latest in a series of major investments ExxonMobil has made in Singapore to meet the increasing demand in the Asia Pacific region.”
ExxonMobil has completed feasibility studies and early design work on the new unit. Once the unit is completed, the refinery’s total low sulfur diesel capacity will rise to more than 25 million liters per day.
When used in modern engines, ultra low sulfur diesel, commonly used to run everything from tractor-trailers, buses and marine vessels to off-road equipment such as backhoes, threshers and locomotives, leads to improved air quality.
The Singapore project follows other recent ExxonMobil investments in diesel hydrotreaters at its refineries in Baytown and Baton Rouge in the United States and Antwerp, Belgium. These investments totaled over US$1 billion and increase ultra low sulfur diesel supply capacity by more than 22 million liters a day.
ExxonMobil invests to sustain its competitiveness throughout the business cycle and is committed to meeting the world's energy demand in an environmentally, economically and socially responsible manner.
