Name: Greg University: University of Melbourne Course:
Chemical Engineering / Science
----------------------------------------------------
Greg
completed a double degree in Chemical Engineering and Science at the
University of Melbourne in 2001. During the summer of 2000/2001, Greg
completed vacation work at the Mobil Altona Refinery.
"Working onsite represents a terrific opportunity to put those years of
sitting in lecture theatres into practice with real projects which allow
interaction with people from plant operators & engineers to external
consultants, managers and trades people."
In June
2002, Greg commenced full-time work as a Process Engineer at the refinery,
initially looking after the sites utilities. In February 2003, he became the
Reforming Unit Engineer. Essentially the reforming units are responsible for
generating the high octane gasoline.
"The reforming role
is very 'hands-on' at times. Approximately every nine months, the reforming
catalyst must be regenerated to remove coke that forms on the catalyst
surface. The Reforming Engineer plays an active role in these 'regens',
ensuring that the process conditions are such that the catalyst is returned to
a near new condition."
Greg is now working as a Reforming Specialist in ExxonMobil's Research and
Engineering Group in the U.S.
