Milestone for Long Island Point Upgrade

11 August, 2006

Melbourne: ExxonMobil Australia, an ExxonMobil subsidiary, today marked a major milestone in the $250 million capital upgrade of the Long Island Point (LIP) gas processing plant near Hastings.

Exxon Mobil Corporation Senior Vice-President Stuart McGill and ExxonMobil Australia Chairman, Mark Nolan unveiled a plaque at a ceremony today to commemorate the official opening of the Plant’s new Control Room.

Speaking at the opening Mark Nolan outlined the significance of the investment in LIP to the future of ExxonMobil in Victoria.

"The completion of the new Control Room and the investment we have made here at LIP underlies ExxonMobil’s commitment to a long term future for our upstream operations,” Mr Nolan said.

“When we consider the long term future of oil and gas in Gippsland it is important that LIP continues as a high quality and reliable facility. The investment we are making here aims to achieve this goal.”

Mr Nolan also spoke of the importance of advanced technology in meeting the world’s energy challenges.

"The completion of the new Control Room will also allow us to implement more efficient systems that will deliver enhanced product recovery and reduce flaring and greenhouse gas emissions, Mr Nolan said.

“What has been achieved here epitomizes how advances in technology can enhance our ability to provide the energy that fuels economic growth, while at the same time managing emissions.”

Since opening in 1969 over 3.5 billion barrels, approximately two-thirds of Australia’s cumulative oil production has passed through this Long Island Point plant as well as 650 million barrels of natural gas liquids (NGL’s).

The full upgrade program at LIP includes the refurbishment of LPG refrigerated storage tanks, a fire water system upgrade and new plant emergency shutdown system. The capital works program involves a workforce of around 100 people and is expected to be complete within the next 18 months.
