PNG Women Leaders Win Scholarships to Washington D.C.

20 July 2006

Port Moresby – Esso Highlands Limited is pleased to announce that two of Papua New Guinea’s leading female community managers have been awarded all expenses paid scholarships to attend the Global Women in Management Program: Building Leaders for Development in Washington D.C.

The course is run by the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), an international non-government organization working in education, health and governance for women and children worldwide.

It is targeted at female managers working in development-focused NGOs and community organisations around the world and is sponsored by the ExxonMobil Foundation’s Educating Women and Girls Initiative. Each year, ExxonMobil affiliates around the world are invited to nominate outstanding female community leaders to attend.

In 2006, two PNG candidates have been successful and will attend the course in September. The successful candidates are;
  • Ms. Sisa Kini, CEO of CDI Foundation Trust Fund (CDI); and
  • Ms. Dominica Bessie Abo, National Director, Anglicare StopAIDS PNG
In Washington D.C. they will be joined by twenty-two other female leaders from similar organisations around the world, including Azerbaijan, Egypt, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Qatar, Panama, Barbados, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The one-month residential course will provide training and coaching designed to strengthen management skills and leadership abilities. It will include program design and management, decision-making, leadership, business development, proposal writing, strategic communication, monitoring and evaluation. The course objective is to help participants and their organisations, create positive and sustainable changes at all levels of their community.

From their base in Washington, D.C. and with site visits to Baltimore and New York City, the participants will meet and forge relationships with major donors, access resources and donor databases that are inaccessible in the field, and design and participate in field visits to successful community-based NGOs and projects. They will also be taught by resource persons, speakers, and outside trainers who are internationally recognized experts in their fields.

“We are delighted that Sisa and Bessie have received scholarships to attend this course. We hope that the experience, the learnings, and the international relationships that they will have the opportunity to form will be truly life-changing for them and for their organisations” said Gary Morony, Venture Manager, Esso Highlands Limited, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Corporation in PNG.

“Should the PNG Gas Project proceed, we look forward to working more closely with their organisations and supporting the important community work that they undertake” said Mr Morony.
