Melbourne: ExxonMobil subsidiary, Mobil
Australia Resources Company Pty Ltd, confirmed today the details of a
successful bid for an offshore block in Western Australia, in the latest
Australian exploration acreage gazettal.
The successful bid
was made by a joint venture of ExxonMobil (25%), Chevron (50% and operator),
and Shell (25%) subsidiaries.
The block, which comprises
approximately 3000 square kilometres, is located in the Carnarvon Basin off
the northwest of Western Australia, 100 kilometres from shore and in a water
depth of about 1000 metres.
ExxonMobil is working in
separate joint ventures to progress developments for the Gorgon/Jansz and
Scarborough fields with combined gross resources exceeding 50 TCF of gas.
ExxonMobil Exploration Vice President for Asia Pacific, Stephen Greenlee, said
that the company was pleased that the joint venture had been awarded the
exploration rights for block W06-12.
“The successful
acquisition of exploration rights for W06-12 represents an important addition
to ExxonMobil’s global portfolio and builds on our very active exploration
program in Australia,” said Greenlee.
“Exploration of
this highly prospective new acreage will enhance the long-term potential value
of our Carnarvon Basin assets,” he added.
In
commenting on the successful acreage bid, ExxonMobil Australia Chairman, Mark
Nolan, said that, “the award continues to expand ExxonMobil’s significant
presence in Australia as the country’s largest integrated petroleum company.”
