Growing demand prompts Mobil investment in jet fuel storage

6 October 2011

Mobil Oil Australia today announced plans to expand its storage capacity at Yarraville Terminal to meet the growing demand for jet fuel at Melbourne Airport.

Mobil will extensively refurbish a 5.5 million litre tank to meet the strict international standards for storage and handling of aviation fuels.

The additional tankage will provide new capability and flexibility for Mobil supply of jet fuel to Melbourne Airport. It will also strengthen the security of supply by providing additional import capability.

Yarraville Terminal is the largest fuel storage terminal in Melbourne, supplying around one third of Victoria's fuel needs. Mobil has been a major supplier of aviation fuel to Tullamarine airport for over 40 years.

Mobil has invested in extensive refurbishment and upgrading of the terminal over the past five years. Together with other maintenance work and improvements since 2008 at the Altona Refinery, this investment represents a total commitment of over $250 million to the future safety, reliability and viability of Mobil’s refining and distribution facilities in Melbourne’s west and the security of Victoria’s fuel supply.

The Yarraville terminal is operated by Mobil as a joint terminal for Mobil and BP, and is directly adjacent to the dedicated fuels wharf at Holden Dock.
