ExxonMobil has - compared with the small size of the three countries - a relative high number of plants and other sites in the Benelux. This is due to its favorable geographical position. Antwerp and Rotterdam have very large ports, Rotterdam even the largest port of the world, and a huge hinterland. It is also due to the high density of the population and the economic importance of the Benelux countries. There are two ExxonMobil refineries, eight chemical plants, a center for research and development, a lube oil blending plant and several offices. The head office of ExxonMobil's Benelux organization is located in Breda, in the south of The Netherlands. In this office, about 700, mainly Dutch and Belgian people, work for the various business lines and staff organizations that are represented in the Benelux.
