Monitoring Communities
Much of the environmental monitoring work has focused on the potential effects the project might have on people and communities. This cultural anthropologist, Dr. George Koppert, has been leading a team of researchers in a quality of life study. This team has interviewed more than 7,000 peo ple in villages throughout the oilfield area and along the pipeline route. Questionnaires cover household income, access to medical care, quality of housing, receipt of compensation payments and many other factors. Although the data is still being compiled, preliminary results show that quality of life indexes have generally improved during the project construction.
