ExxonMobil is committed to operating responsibly everywhere we do business by implementing scientifically sound, practical solutions to meet energy needs in an environmentally responsible manner. We have communicated our commitment in detail across all business lines and at all levels.

It is our long-standing policy to conduct business in a manner that considers both the environmental and economic needs of the communities in which we operate. We seek to drive incidents with environmental impact to zero, and to operate in a manner that is not harmful to the environment.

ExxonMobil senior management have reinforced expectations to all business lines for superior environmental performance. This leadership-driven initiative is called Protect Tomorrow. Today.

In recent years, our businesses have continued to improve environmental performance. Oil spills are among the lowest in the industry, and cogeneration capacity, which boosts energy efficiency in our operations, is among the largest in the world. In addition, we have developed and implemented Environmental Business Planning (EBP) as part of the annual business planning cycle — an important tool for managing environmental performance as an integral part of each operation and project.

Building on this progress, senior management launched Protect Tomorrow. Today. to provide further guidance on corporate environmental expectations, with the goal of continuing improvement in our environmental performance. Specifically, business lines are expected to:

  • Deliver superior environmental performance, leading to competitive advantage.
  • Drive environmental incidents with real impact to zero.
  • Achieve industry leadership in key environmental areas relevant to each business.

Esso-Mamirauá Environmental Education Program, Brazil
The Esso-Mamirauá Environmental Education Program was created in 2003 to promote environmental awareness among young people living in the Mamirauá and Amaña Sustainable Development Reserves. The program teaches biodiversity and wetland ecosystem conservation in urban and rural schools in neighboring towns. Since 2003, the program has directly benefited more than 19,600 children and adolescents as well as 308 elementary and high school teachers.

Connecting Economic Development with Biodiversity,
Equatorial Guinea
ExxonMobil supports the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP), an academic partnership between Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, and the Universidad Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial, the national university of Equatorial Guinea. The ExxonMobil Foundation-sponsored project entails developing the skills of local university bioscientists, creating a research center in Equatorial Guinea and employing local villagers as participants in wildlife patrols and as data collectors. Through the activities of this program, villagers are becoming better stewards of their natural environment, building their intellectual capacity in the biological sciences and laying the groundwork for a viable ecotourism sector.
