Health and Safety Achievements

Exxon Mobil Corporation has been awarded the 2008 Malaria Award by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in recognition of the corporation’s Africa Health Initiative and its role in the battle against malaria.

International Marine Transportation Limited

  • International Marine Transportation Limited, ExxonMobil’s marine transportation U.K. based affiliate, received the 2008 Sword of Honour from the British Safety Council for the eighth consecutive year. The Sword of Honour recognizes 40 organizations that have implemented safety systems that have received a five star audit rating and are among the best in the world.

Baytown, Texas

  • Baytown Refinery, Baytown Chemical Plant, Baytown Olefins Plant received the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) Merit Award received by BTRF and BTCP for achieving a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of less than 1.0 with no employee or contractor fatalities.
  • The NPRA Gold Award was given to Baytown Refinery for improving the site’s employee TRIR by 25 percent from the previous three year average.
  • NPRA awarded Baytown Refinery the Award for Safety Achievement for Hours for recording 1,926,607 employee hours without a lost workday.
  • The National Safety Council recognized Baytown Refinery for achieving a lost workday incident rate less than 50 percent of the Bureau of Labor Statistics rating for North American Industry Classification System.
  • Baytown Chemical Plant received the National Safety Council Perfect Record Award for having twelve or more consecutive months without an occupational injury/illness that resulted in days away from work or death.
  • Baytown Chemical Plant also received the Construction Users Roundtable Owner’s Award for exemplary programs of safety management.
  • The Texas Chemical Council (TCC) awarded Baytown Chemical Plant with the Distinguished Service Award for improvement in injury and illness rate when compared to the previous three year average, and also for showing compliance with a list of requirements including a proactive substance abuse program.

RASA (Refineria Petrolera Acajutla, S.A.) Facility

  • Received the National Award for outstanding performance and leadership in safety health and the environment by the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Public Health, and 3M El Salvador.

Beaumont Refinery and Chemical Plant

  • The Beaumont refinery and chemical plant received the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Super Star among Stars and the Star among Stars awards respectively. Both facilities were also awarded NPRA’s Meritorious Safety Performance and Safety Achievement awards.

Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant

  • For the third time, the Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant received the OSHA VPP Star recertification for effective worksite-based safety and health programs.
  • In June 2008, the Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant received the TCC Excellence in Caring for Texas Award in honor of the site’s commitment to its employees and community. One site in each facility size category receives the award. The objective of Caring for Texas is to promote continuous improvement by TCC member companies relative to their performance in community awareness, emergency response, security, and pollution prevention.
  • The facility also received awards including the TCC Distinguished Safety Service Award; the NPRA Award for Meritorious Safety and Performance, Award for Safety Achievement for Hours, Gold Award; and VPP Star Among Stars

Baton Rouge Polyolefins (BRPO)

  • Received the NPRA Distinguished Safety Award, the Louisiana Chemical Association (LCA) SAFE Award (Serious About Fostering Excellence), and the Construction Users Roundtable Safety Excellence Award in 2008.

Environmental Achievements

SeaRiver Maritime, Inc.

  • Received its third William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Award from the U.S. Coast Guard to recognize outstanding achievements in marine environmental protection that go beyond mere compliance with industrial and regulatory standards.
  • The first and only company to successfully achieve renewal status four consecutive periods for the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Exceptional Compliance Program (ECOPRO).
  • The Chamber of Shipping of America awarded Sea River with the Jones F. Devlin Award for operating at least two years without a lost-time injury and the Environmental Achievement Award for operating at least two years without an environmental incident.
  • Recognized by the Port of Long Beach Green Flag Program for voluntary participation in the marine air quality initiative in southern California. SeaRiver has received this recognition each year since its inception in 2006.

Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant

  • Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) recognized the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant in June with its prestigious "Ready for Reuse" designation.
  • The Ready for Reuse program recognizes sites or facilities that have taken action to make them safe for reuse or redevelopment. Part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Land Revitalization Initiative, the program recognizes sites that are considered acceptable for their designated reuse, verifying that the environmental conditions on a property are protective of human health and the environment based on its current use and anticipated future use as a commercial or industrial operation

ExxonMobil Environmental Services Retail Remediation Sites

  • ExxonMobil Station No. 18-G8X in Los Angeles was one of 9 sites out of 16,000 that the City of Los Angeles Sanitation Board of Public Works recognized for outstanding compliance with industrial wastewater pretreatment and discharge standards in 2007. The remediation system was managed through flawless execution of our ExxonMobil Environmental Services OIMS procedures, resulting in protection of human health and the environment.

    Four of ExxonMobil’s retail remediation sites were chosen among 459 companies out of 1100 to be recognized by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for being “good corporate citizens” by consistently complying with all industrial wastewater discharge requirements in 2007. This included:
    • Meeting limits for wastewater discharge;
    • Being free from any notices of violation;
    • Maintaining their environmental equipment; and,
    • Fulfilling their permit requirements.

Wildlife Habitat Council Certified Sites

ExxonMobil Irving Headquarters

  • ExxonMobil’s Irving, Texas headquarters was recertified in 2008, for its continuous innovative policies regarding the land and local wildlife. Beginning in 1996, and since certification in 2003, ExxonMobil has been maintaining and improving habitats for wildlife through routine cleanups, trail creation and appreciation, and habitat creation activities.

ExxonMobil Billings Refinery

  • The Billings Refinery has been Wildlife Habitat Council certified since 2002. The teams present at the site are in the process of replanting native vegetation and creating suitable habitats for osprey nesting. In addition, the site employees sponsor field trips for local Boy Scouts, high school classes, and other visitors to learn about and enjoy their wildlife habitat restoration activities.

ExxonMobil Black Canyon Dehydration Facility

  • The ExxonMobil Black Canyon Dehydration Facility has been collaborating with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department since 1998 to create and monitor a pond to benefit Colorado River cutthroat trout. In 2008, the facility was recertified for their continuing action to ensure a healthy water supply for the fish and protected habitat for other wildlife, including moose, elk, mule deer, tree swallows, American robins, and Brewer’s blackbirds.

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company

  • Since certification in 2003, the ExxonMobil Pipeline Company has shown considerable concern for the nesting habitat of migratory birds near the St. Mary’s island operations in Houston, Texas. ExxonMobil restored a 12-acre for migratory bird habitat. Through partnerships with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the team successfully recreated habitat for ground colonial birds, upland and wading birds, and estuarine game birds. The team is responsible for managing, monitoring, and upgrading habitat as well as controlling invasive species.

Clinton Research Facility

  • The Clinton Research Facility, in New Jersey, was certified as a Corporate Lands for Learning Site. This award recognizes the site’s strong commitment to using site resources for educational purposes for members of the local community. ExxonMobil scientists have actively worked with middle school student to demonstrate how various science disciplines can be applied in understanding and protecting the environment. The Clinton Research Facility has been presenting wildlife rehabilitation projects to the public which highlight the use of math and science as positive aspects of programs designed to restore native wildlife habitats.
