Capital investments to meet future energy needs

Meeting growing global energy demand requires sustained investments through periods of both low and high commodity prices.  ExxonMobil plans to invest at record levels — between $25 billion to $30 billion annually — over the next five years.

  • The International Energy Agency estimates that approximately $11 trillion in new investments in oil and gas supplies will be needed in the 2008 to 2030 timeframe — close to $480 billion per year on average.
  • For the 25 year period (1984 through 2008) ExxonMobil's capital and exploration expenditures totaled $369 billion, essentially equal to our cumulative earnings of $370 billion over the period.
  • In the first three quarters of 2009 our capital and exploration expenditures were almost $19 billion — and exceeded our earnings by $5.6 billion.
