to diversify as new technologies emerge.
Updated each year, the Outlook analyzes the trends that will shape global energy supply and demand over the coming decades.
Many of the hallmarks of human progress—the improvements in how people live, work and stay safe and healthy—are enabled by energy.
As societies advance, they will continue to need energy to power homes, businesses, industry, transportation, electricity generation and other vital services. The Outlook examines each of those demand sectors in detail.
For people and economies to advance, energy supplies must grow to meet their needs. Through 2040, improvements in technology will further expand energy supplies, and we will continue to find ways to use energy more efficiently.
Global energy-related CO2 emissions are expected to level off around the year 2030, even as overall energy use continues to increase to support economic development and human progress around the world.
All of ExxonMobil’s major investments have their roots in The Outlook for Energy. Because we know that the world’s energy future will be shaped by decisions made not just by companies like ours, but also by policymakers and consumers, we share this document publicly to encourage a broader understanding of energy issues that affect us all.
