Cylinder condition monitoring helped reduce feed rates by more than 30 per cent for ship operators

Evolving international emission standards, changes in operating speeds and cost-saving reductions in cylinder oil feed rates have combined to create unprecedented operating challenges for two-stroke marine diesel engines, many of which must now perform at levels beyond the capabilities conceived for their original designs.

Increasingly, ship operators are looking to advanced condition monitoring programmes to protect engines operating under severe conditions while also lowering operational costs.

Implementation of the MobilGard™ Cylinder Condition Monitoring (CCM) programme, used in conjunction with a high performance MobilGard™ cylinder oil, enabled HTM Shipping to minimise engine wear and deposit formation while also reducing the feed rates of two of its bulk carriers, the M/V Jia Da and M/V Jia Run by a total of 9.23 percent, with no increase in engine wear.

The move also helped extend engine life, reduce operational costs and lessen the vessels’ environmental impact. Similar regimes were implemented across the HTM Shipping fleet – nine vessels in total – giving the company an overall reduction in cylinder oil of 17 per cent in 12 months.
