since 1909: a legacy of commitment to baton rouge

In 1909, ExxonMobil’s earlier incarnation, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, selected bluffs of the Mississippi River north of Baton Rouge to build a new refinery. The refinery employed 700 residents of Baton Rouge, a city of only 15,000 at the time, and produced 1,800 barrels of oil daily. Over the course of the century, ExxonMobil Baton Rouge has grown from a refinery on 225 acres of former cotton fields to one of the largest and most integrated refining and petrochemical hubs in the world.

Our success in the energy and petrochemical industries makes it possible for us to contribute to the well-being of the Baton Rouge community where we create job opportunities, pay taxes and provide products. We are committed to using our resources to help support the local economy and improve the quality of life in the city. As one of the largest private employers in East Baton Rouge Parish, we provide quality jobs for more than 5,200 residents. We believe that safety comes first in all we do.

Moreover, being neighbors means more than just sharing the same general location. It means caring about the safety, prosperity and appearance of the shared neighborhood. That’s why we strive to contribute positively to the communities where we operate.

We view our youth and schools as our most promising natural resources we know. Our employees spend countless hours volunteering at various nonprofit agencies and schools, while the company provides financial support through contributions and grants.

We organize plant tours for the community (students fourth grade and older may participate). Call 225-977-TOUR (8687) at least two weeks in advance to make a reservation. To talk to a Tour Office representative directly, call on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
