Baton Rouge Refinery (BRRF)

Baton Rouge Refinery (BRRF)

history
In April 1909, Standard Oil Company of Louisiana was chartered, and construction of the refinery began on a cotton field on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. It initially employed 700 residents of Baton Rouge, a city of 15,000 at that time, and processed 1,800 barrels of oil daily.

BRRF today
We are the second largest refinery in the United States. Occupying 2,100 acres, we process over 500,000 barrels of crude oil daily. More than 1,300 employees and almost 1,000 contractors work here.

end products and their uses
We manufacture more than 300 products, including:

  • Motor gasoline (automobiles, tractors, lawn equipment)
  • Diesel fuel (autos, trains, boats, heating, power generation)
  • Jet fuel (jet airliners, military jets)
  • Aviation gasoline (propeller aircraft)
  • Lubricating oils (engine oils, transmission fluid, chain saws)
  • Waxes (makeup, candles, crayons and gum)
  • Petroleum coke (furnace fuel, anodes for aluminum production)
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (heating, cooking, refrigeration, tobacco and grain drying, soldering, chemical feedstock)
  • Chemical feedstock (used to produce chemicals)

achievements and awards
We recognize Baton Rouge is growing, therefore its drinking water needs are growing. Our emphasis is to reduce the amount of ground water withdrawal by expanding the use of clarified river water.

We have already converted two cooling towers from ground water to river water reducing the use of groundwater by 600,000 gallons per day. In recognition of these efforts, the Capital Area Ground Water Conservation Commission gave us its top award in 2004.

In 2005, we received three National Petrochemical and Refiners Association awards for meritorious safety performance.
