ExxonMobil is conducting research into innovative, commercially viable technologies that have the potential to dramatically reduce emissions in the future.
Commercial viability is essential if large scale introduction is to be possible. - Working with Toyota on advanced internal combustion engines to find ways to deliver cleaner fuel and engine performance, including studies on combustion, modelling, aftertreatment and new materials.
- Working with car manufacturers on hybrid technology, which combines electric motors with internal combustion engines to dramatically reduce fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions. Up to 40% energy and CO2 savings are possible depending on the extent of hybridization.
- Working on a reformer that converts petrol to hydrogen on board a vehicle, vastly reducing emissions. This is an important step towards making fuel cells practical, without the need for a hydrogen-refueling infrastructure.
