The environmental management system, based on the international ISO 14001standard, is designed to ensure systematic and continuous improvement in the environmental area.

Overall environmental objectives include targets for zero acute pollution, achieving zero harmful discharges to the sea by 2005, reducing emissions to the air, minimizing the amount of waste and the risk of undesirable incidents, contributing to environmentally related research, and striving for an optimally efficient use of energy.

The independent institution Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance stated after reviewing the company’s management system in 2001: "We regard ExxonMobil to be an industry leader regarding the way environmental management is integrated into the company’s business operations".
