Jørn Hurum to inspire Sci-Tech Challenge students

The front figure behind Spitsbergen Jurassic Research Group, Jørn Hurum, is to participate in Sci-Tech Challenge jury together with Stavanger’s mayor Christine Sagen Helgø. The event will kick off at February 1st at Folkets Hus in Stavanger.

•         Over 130 students from Rogaland to test their math & science skills

•         Sci-Tech Challenge to reach out to approx. 10.000 students in Europe

•         Winners from 8 countries to participate in European finale in Rotterdam

STAVANGER: Over 130 students from the upper secondary schools Hetland, Randaberg, Sandnes and St. Olav will receive an assignment related to future energy challenges. The students will make and present a business plan, which will be reviewed by a jury.

Experts from ExxonMobil together with external participants within politics, research, academy and industry will represent the jury. Jørn Hurum, Christine Sagen Helgø and Anna Aabø are among those who are ready to contribute with their expertise in this year’s jury in Rogaland.

- We are proud of the fact that several ExxonMobil experts engage in this project, and that so many external experts volunteer as motivators. Recruitment to the energy business is a challenge that is important to address. Though it should be easy - math & science is so much fun, says Kristin F. Kragseth, ExxonMobil’s Nordic Public & Government Affairs Manager.

The main objective of the Sci-Tech Challenge is for students early in their careers to engage a dialogue with dedicated experts with math & science skills – qualities they use in their everyday work life.

The winning team will go through to the final challenge, which will take place in Rotterdam. In April the Norwegian winners are to compete with students from seven other countries: Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium, United Kingdom, Russia and Poland.

ExxonMobil has in cooperation with Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) developed the Sci-Tech Challenge Program to inspire students in upper secondary schools in order to choose math & science as a basis for higher education. Sci-Tech Challenge is an event for students from 16 to 19 years old in Rogaland and Vestfold.
