| | Name: Laura Burchell University: Loughborough Degree: Business and Management Function: Commercial Placement (Lubes and Specialties) I joined ExxonMobil’s Lubricants and Specialties department in 2007 through the Industrial Placement Scheme. My role was working as a Marketing Programme Administrator providing assistance to the United Kingdom and Benelux Marketing Team. From day one you are instantly a member of the working team with your own responsibilities and task to complete. The organisation has a great ethos, flexible working environment and you are quickly welcomed into the department. During the first half of my placement I had to remain adaptive to situations and changes, for example the transition of the budget monitoring system from Excel into Access. This programme move meant I had to become a proficient user of the new system but this also allowed me to work closely with internal colleagues and a third party organisation. My main role during this project was to help identify issues, improvements and enhancements from a users’ perspective. It was an excellent way of acquiring more contacts and building strong working relationships. During the second half of my placement I project managed the execution of the online Fantasy Grand Prix game. The objectives were to ensure that the game had all the appropriate approvals and to then monitor the game during the 2008 F1 season. It was a great way to put in practice the knowledge and skills I had gained during my first 6 months. At the end of my placement I was luckily enough to get involved in organising and hosting the 2008 British Grand Prix. I had to help finalise our guest’s details for the weekend including the Garden Party, our prestigious evening event held the night before race day. Thorough out the whole placement I was a proactive member of the UKI and BNL marketing team and ensured all UK activities followed the correct process and were documented in the correct method. This placement has taught me how to balance and prioritise my workload whilst ensuring I delivered a high standard of work in a timely manner. It demonstrated the importance of remaining proactive in every day tasks especially when faced with a problem. I left ExxonMobil having acquired general business knowledge and skills that I can now utilise when back at University and in my future career.
