Job Title: Performance Fluids Market Development Support
Studied BSc Hons Chemistry at Bath University (1995) and DPhil Chemistry at Oxford University (1998)
Having studied chemistry for seven years at University I knew that I didn't want to leave the chemistry world altogether, but at the same time I knew a research and development career wasn't for me. I was looking for a challenging position that would combine my technical background with a more commercial element. ExxonMobil offered just that.
I joined ExxonMobil as a Sales Assistant in the Performance Fluids Sales and Marketing team. Initially I was supporting the Technical Sales Representatives, combining technical support with market studies and some account management. Along with the training at London Business School my Sales Assistant role provided a sound understanding of the Fluids business and the commercial exposure that I was looking for. I was soon able to put my new skills to the test when I became a Technical Sales Representative responsible for some of our major solvent accounts in the UK. Technical Sales was where I thought I had found my niche. I found the combination of commercial challenges, technical support and customer relationships extremely rewarding. But, as always with ExxonMobil, there was a bigger and better opportunity just around the corner!
I am now working at our European Technology headquarters in Brussels where I am responsible for the technical support of some of our Performance Fluids applications. Customer visits are still a part of my role but I now also travel throughout Europe to meet research and development contacts and production specialists. A foreign assignment is a great experience and working in a HQ environment means I meet people from all over the world.
After twelve months concentrating on technical support my role expanded to include responsibility for some of the health, safety and regulatory aspects of our products. This added a new dimension as I am now a member of several trade association groups working on issues affecting the solvents industry. There's never time to get bored in ExxonMobil! After six years with the company I am still only in the early stages of my career but with the excellent training and support provided I know there is much more to come.
