Job Title: Polyolefins Sales and Marketing Assistant - UK

Studied: BSc Hons Forensic and Analytical Chemistry - University of Strathclyde

I first joined ExxonMobil as an Industrial Placement Student working as a development chemist in the Chemical Plant Lab at Fawley Refinery. During this placement I was responsible for the analysis of a wide range of petrochemical feedstocks, products and by-products. During this time I was able to get a good insight into the workings and vast diversity of such a large petrochemical company. Before leaving Fawley I was given the opportunity to be assessed for a graduate position. I had thoroughly enjoyed my placement with ExxonMobil and was keen to return, which is why I applied to Chemical Sales and Marketing.

After graduating I returned to the South Coast to work as the Sales and Marketing Assistant for Polyolefins in the UK. The scale of the job is initially surprising. Within our team we sell roughly 200,000 tonnes of polyethylene and polypropylene each year, which is equivalent to over 30 truck loads per day! My job requires regular interaction with ExxonMobil sites all over the world. The polymer we sell arrives in the UK from over 3 continents and then has to be sold to over 200 different customers all over the UK. In a business where supply and demand are always crucial factors it is my job to ensure that we sell these 30 truck loads per day in as efficient and as cost effective manner as possible.

My role involves interaction with a wide variety of people, from global managers, customers, hauliers and chemical plants all over the world. Travel is a prerequisite and in my first year I will have travelled to many European countries for different work commitments.

Your first job is most certainly a real job. Both as a student and as a graduate you will be tested in many different ways, however, you will be rewarded with interesting and demanding challenges!

The next step from this position would be to become a sales rep within ExxonMobil Chemical. My time spent in this role has certainly helped with an initial understanding of a very diverse and challenging business and will hopefully stand me in good stead for my future career.
