Senior Developer, New Business Development, Gas and Power Marketing

BEng Automotive Engineering from Loughborough University

After spending my third year of University as an Industrial Placement Student with Exxon Mobil working in the Global Aviation function of Fuels Marketing, I knew that the company met by requirements of a large, blue chip employer with a commitment to training and development and the opportunity to travel extensively across the world. On completion of my final year, I decided to move away from my engineering background and pursue a more commercial career, taking up a post within the Gas and Power Marketing Company.

My first role saw me joining the Europe Short Term Sales team, working first as a sales analyst and then a front line negotiator. With total responsibility for our ‘within month’ UK sales and purchases portfolio, I worked closely with our Supply Planning, and Gas Control functions, ensuring our UK portfolio was balanced on a daily basis. After my first year I moved to the Europe Business Support function where I became involved in providing economic analysis to support and progress many of the companies commercial opportunities and activities. I was also able to obtain a much broader understanding of the companies European portfolio by helping to coordinate many global company processes, including our annual corporate plan for the European business.

After 2 years I was offered the chance to take up a position in Germany, working on the Gas Transportation side of the business, which I accepted without hesitation. This provided me with an incredible opportunity to not only learn about a vastly different area of the business, working in a market right at the centre of current European regulatory initiatives, but also allowed me to experience a different culture and way of life as well a chance to brush up on my German language skills!

Now in my fourth assignment in our New Business Development group, I find myself based in Houston, working on many of the new projects that will shape the future of the company. Much of this work is centered around projects in development in Qatar, meaning that I now travel to the Middle East on a regular basis giving me another totally different perspective of the industry.

The diverse nature of not just my assignments, but also the cultures and locations I’ve been based, as well as the people I’ve worked with mean that my first three years have been an extremely challenging but exciting time. So far I can only say that my expectations of the company have more than been met and I look forward to more opportunities in the future to carry on this trend.
