Tom Summers
Job Title: EAME Manufacturing Process Application Support Manager
Studied: Hons & MA in Music at Bristol

I chose to apply to ExxonMobil because I wanted to work for a multinational company that gave me a variety of opportunities and challenges within a globally diverse working environment. As with most students just out of university, I wanted the chance to travel and meet new people. In addition, I had an interest to work in IT and found that ExxonMobil provided the technical and developmental training required to do the job.

Bearing in mind I joined ExxonMobil without any technical knowledge at all, my first role was a real challenge from the moment I started. I joined the E-Business Skill Center as an Engineering & Design Analyst and began working almost immediately on global projects that implemented key corporate IT infrastructure such as the messaging and collaboration service. As the role developed I gained more experience and more responsibility becoming a specialist in the development and implementation of secure connections to Third party companies such as our core venture partners in the Middle East.

I then moved roles right to the other end of the spectrum in which I was responsible for coordinating the provision of needed IT services to our business lines within the Leatherhead office. This job was challenging in completely different ways to the first; working at the sharp end of the service, liaising directly with Business management to ensure that their needs are met through the services we offer. This gave me a significant amount of experience and understanding in how applications and services fit in to the ever-changing business strategy.
My latest role has been yet another huge change where I am now managing an application support team that look after manufacturing process applications used by Refineries, Chemical Plants and Lube blending plants across Europe, Africa and Middle East. At their simplest, these applications allow the sites to analyse past performance of their plants in order to optimise the operations for the future. My team of approximately 20 is currently based in four countries across Europe, enabling us to benefit from the diversity and experience of resources throughout the region. This job has given me a chance to see another key part of the business supply chain and its importance to the company's success. Our current vision for the team is to become a truly global support group that is able to support all sites worldwide from key centres in each region. I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively during the past few years including mainland Europe, US and Asia Pacific.
The work at ExxonMobil is challenging and rewarding, but it is the people and the environment that make coming to work an enjoyable experience. One of the key success factors of joining ExxonMobil has been that the graduate development programme and induction week enables you to quickly build a group of friends across the UK both in and out of work.

Who knows what the future will offer but if the first few years are anything to go by, I am sure that it will be just as varied, eye opening and enjoyable as before.
