Why ExxonMobil?
After conducting a thorough investigation of the range of schemes for graduates, I quickly realised that very few of the options available were tailored to my needs.
My desire was to work for a large organisation that offered a diverse career path, had a strong global presence to allow opportunity for international travel and yet understood the importance of maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

I wanted to secure a role that demanded immediate responsibility, with a workload driven by genuine business need. It was important for me to harness and develop my analytical and problem solving skills in a job that is varied and interesting. In addition, I wanted the opportunity to work towards a professional qualification.
ExxonMobil has succeeded in meeting these expectations, which is why it is the company of choice for me.

My Role
I am a well integrated member of a small team responsible for reporting earnings, sales, operating expenditure and margin data for the Marine Fuels business. The information is summarized and reviewed monthly with the Global Marine Fuels Director, where I present the analysis relating to sales and operating expenditure. Whilst this was a daunting experience during my initial months with the company, I was confident in the knowledge that the numbers that I calculate and analyse are subsequently used to help make decisions that will impact the business – no pressure then!

The Marine business is global which means that I report worldwide performance. It also makes me the main port of call to consolidate data and resolve issues. As a result I have a global network of contacts where I am frequently providing or receiving support from fellow employees in a range of locations, from the United States to Singapore.
More recently, I have been heavily involved with a project within controllers, the implementation of a bespoke system aimed at improving analysis and driving efficiencies within the organisation. This has this allowed me to play an active role in the facilitation of a successful project and has provided me with a further insight into the mechanics behind the Marine business model and cost structure.

Training
ExxonMobil provide financial support through the relevant CIMA training courses which will enable me to pass the exams required to qualify as an accountant. Working full time whilst studying is a challenge, but ExxonMobil soothe this pain by providing a generous amount of company time for use as study leave.
I also attend the ExxonMobil Graduate Development Programme, a three-year management course which is held at the prestigious London Business School. This consists of several different modules such as HR, Marketing and Finance, and gives each graduate the opportunity to broaden their knowledge outside of their function specific training. In addition to this, I have the opportunity to attend ad hoc courses, most recently flight safety training!

Personal Development
The steep learning curve provided by ExxonMobil has allowed me to acquire new skills and develop existing ones. I relish the fact that I learn something new every day, and work with colleagues with extensive experience and knowledge that I can draw from. I look forward to my next role so that I can broaden my understanding of other parts of the business, and start in the deep end all over again!
