Jack Hartley
Electrical Apprentice
I initially applied for the apprenticeship because I was keen to learn a trade, as you will never be out of a job. I was keen to get the ExxonMobil job as I knew they were a reputable company and provided excellent training for their apprentices. The job also came with many benefits such as free driving lessons and an annual salary- so you earn whilst you learn. The position I was offered was of electrical discipline. The main aspects of the job involve working with an experienced technician to “show you the ropes”. My responsibilities varied, but mainly included: • fault finding using electrical drawings; • maintenance activities on breakers; • installing/repairing lighting; and • motor disconnection/reconnection. Many specialist works to the refinery is also carried out so there is a lot that you can get involved in. So far in the apprenticeship I have managed to gain electrical experience/ knowledge, life skills such as communication and working with others and finished a PEO NVQ2 and BTEC engineering at Southampton City College. I've had a great time and hope to achieve much more in my time left at ExxonMobil.
