| | Name: Gregor Morrison University: Newcastle Degree: Chemical Engineering Function: Refining and Chemicals Role….. I worked in the Utilities Technical Department of Fawley Refinery and was responsible for the day to day running and long term optimisation of the Refinery Cooling Water and Effluent Treatment systems as well as a commercial role working with 3rd Party Power and Gas companies. I lead various projects throughout my year including pressure and flow improvements of the Refinery Salt Water system. I took the lead in initiating operational improvements of the Effluent Treatment Plant including several pressure surveys, developing an operational improvement strategy and the enhancement of the Refinery waste water qualities. I was also responsible for the reconciliation, processing and signing off of multi million pound invoices on a monthly basis, which often meant dealing with multinational power and gas companies when our figures didn’t agree. This commercial element of my role added variety and provided me many challenges. What was most rewarding was seeing the ideas and changes I made being implemented on site and knowing that my ideas and hard work had paid off. What have I enjoyed? Everything!!! The people you meet, the fantastic opportunities available to you within the company and the unbelievable learning experience that the company provide you with! Your not on your own when on placement with Exxonmobil, each year there is a cohort of 10 Industrial Placement Students and a steady stream of new graduates coming in. So even though you are away from University for a year, the social side of things will still remain a big part of your life! Advice for Applicants…. This is not a stereotypical internship where photocopying and Filing are the norm! From day 1 you are given real roles and responsibilities that really test your abilities to the max. You are considered as much a part of the company as those at the highest level and really can make a difference.
