Primary Assignment
Generally, newly hired tax lawyers are assigned to one of the Tax Departments
in one of the following locations:
Houston, TX with Upstream Business Services (exploration and production
operations), Tax Law, Appeals and Litigation (federal audit and appeals), or
Chemicals (chemcial production operations)
Fairfax, VA with Downstream Business Services (refining, marketing and
transportation operations). Subsequent to the initial assignment,
opportunities exists for assignments with other divisional affiliate tax
departments in several other U.S. locations and abroad.
Examples of Specific Job Responsibilities
Provide tax counsel in the planning of the Corporation's operations and
transactions
Provide legal support for the determination and payment of the Corporation's
tax liabilities
Advise management at all levels of the organization with respect to the
interpretation, significance and effect of tax laws, regulations, rulings and
court decisions
Prepare requests for federal and state tax rulings and claims for refund, and
work closely with outside counsel in all tax litigation
Exposure to different areas of corporate tax practice, including oil and gas
taxation, corporate income taxation, compensation and benefits taxation,
partnership taxation, real estate taxation, international taxation, state and
local taxation, taxation of mergers and acquisitions, and consolidated returns.
Qualifications Desired
Successful completion of basic law school courses in U.S. federal, state and
local and/or international taxation
Desire a legal career in the practice areas of state, U.S. federal and/or
international taxation
