Higher education
ExxonMobil supports numerous programs that encourage women and minorities to pursue math- and science-related fields. The programmatic focus of our higher education initiatives is on supporting programs that improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In 2008, ExxonMobil provided more than $39.5 million worldwide
to colleges, universities and other organizations that support higher education. Of this amount, $35.2 million benefited higher education within the United States.
Our major financial support for higher education in the U.S. is the Educational Matching Gift Program offered through the ExxonMobil Foundation. This program encourages and assists ExxonMobil employees and retirees in their personal giving to higher education by providing a $3-for-$1 matching program. In 2008, we granted more than $25.4million in matching funds to 930 colleges and universities, the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the American Indian College Fund.
We work to ensure that access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education is made available, particularly to women and minorities in the United States. We continue to support the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, United Negro College Fund, American Indian College Fund, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. The Corporation also funded programs at universities and national associations to increase the enrollment of women and minority students in geoscience degree programs.
Almost $2.0 million was provided to 85 colleges and universities in the U.S. for use by academic departments and are unrestricted for educational use.
