Product development and proving performance

Our reputation for introducing breakthrough products is renowned worldwide. At the heart of our technology leadership is ongoing collaboration among our technical teams in the lab, in the field, and in dialogue with equipment designers. Our scientists are passionate for technological innovation. They focus on product integrity and drive to solve global challenges with commercial products — developing tomorrow's innovative products, today.
Our state-of-the-art research and engineering facilities located in Paulsboro, New Jersey, USA, feature world-class laboratories for product development and performance testing. The latest rigs, engines, and vehicle-testing capabilities are employed for understanding real-world operating conditions, as well as high-throughput experimentation of new materials and new product discovery.
From a product's original design concept to commercialization, delivery, and eventually to retirement — performance, clear representation, and thorough stewardship are considered part of product management. Our expertise enables a global technology network that links diverse ExxonMobil teams and extends to Original Equipment Manufacturers and other key industry players.
Product development is a cross-functional and integrated cycle involving key stakeholders (including marketing, chemical, corporate strategic research, product research and engineering, refining and supply, sales, and technical organizations) in order to maximize benefits. Continuous improvement is embedded as a key element of process management in order to ensure outstanding performance and competitive advantage.
Our researchers formulate products that meet or exceed relevant industry standards and customer needs. They demonstrate this through extensive product testing — such as bench, rig, and engine, as well as field testing. This is critical for making sure and proving our products meet our specific brand claims and representations.
Once proven in our laboratory setting, products are subjected to industry-standard tests, proprietary tests, and/or field testing to verify performance. Our field engineers help identify applications where data and conditions can be monitored. Our technologists, and sometimes even equipment builders, are at hand to review results of the test and evaluate the new technology. Our blend plants have tools that drive continuous improvement and evaluation of product quality performance as part of the product management process.
Beyond testing, product line management tools streamline the product and formulation implementation from concept through manufacture and delivery. Advanced modelling can be selectively applied to finished lubricants development to optimize formulations and performance.
