History of Beaumont

Beaumont, located on the banks of the Neches River just 30 miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico, is a thriving, dynamic city with a colorful past that dates back to early French and Spanish explorers.

Incorporated in 1838, Beaumont first sprang to life as a lumber mill and trading center. But on January 10, 1901, one word changed the city's fate forever: OIL. Beaumont is the home of Spindletop. Spindletop initially produced 75,000 to 80,000 barrels a day. No one was prepared for the gusher and for several days, the oil flowed freely while the crew tried to cap it. Spindletop would eventually produce 3.2 million barrels in its first year of operation As soon as the news traveled about the discovery, Texas was crawling with wildcatters, prospectors and con men interested in getting in on the action.

Almost half a million people call the greater Beaumont area home, making it the region's largest city. It is a natural and cultural crossroad, rich in history and offering the best of many worlds to residents and visitors alike. Because of its near proximity to Louisiana, the French "Cajun" culture seasons Beaumont's food and folkways. Beaumont is steeped in Southern tradition as well, including friendliness and hospitality.

Beaumont has all forms of recreational activity -- from golf on one of the area courses, to picnics at one of its 35 parks, from birding to canoeing and from hunting to fresh and saltwater fishing. There's the Gulf of Mexico, the East Texas Lake Country and the "biological crossroads" of North America, the Big Thicket National Preserve all in the area. There are river rides, swamp tours, and camping.

Beaumont is also known as the "Museum Capital of Texas" with attractions including everything from the world-class Texas Energy Museum to the small, unique museums for which the city is known. You can enjoy entertainment virtually any day of the year, from Classical to Zydeco and from Pop and Jazz to Country and Cajun.
