AEP River Operations cut oil use and reduce waste by using synthetic lubricants

By switching to Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 and using Mobil Serv℠ Lubricant Analysis, AEP River Operations was able to extend oil drain intervals and decrease oil usage and waste oil disposal, helping reduce its environmental impact on US inland waterways.

Strategy to reduce emissions


In early 2012, AEP embarked on a strategy to reduce emissions, while improving the performance and reliability of its fleet. To support the implementation of this strategy, AEP selected the synthetic high-speed engine oil, Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 , to replace the conventional mineral oil used in its boats’ main and generator engines.

Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40  is formulated to perform in the most severe marine applications and is particularly well suited to the tow/push boats in the AEP River Operations fleet. As well as providing outstanding wear protection, synthetic oils have been known to last 6-10 times as long as mineral oils, which can equate to significant environmental benefits.

As part of its environmental strategy AEP also started using the readily biodegradable hydraulic oil, Mobil EAL Envirosyn™ H Series, in the fleet’s line-haul steering systems.

Outstanding results


Engine operating data and used oil analysis data recorded by AEP’s engineering and maintenance group, vessel crews and ExxonMobil engineers, showed that upgrading from mineral oil to the fully synthetic Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 enabled AEP to:

  •     Decrease engine oil usage by an average of 80%
  •     Extend oil drain intervals from 500-1,000 hours to over 5,000 hours
  •     Decrease waste oil disposal by an average of 80%
  •     Reduce overall downtime

Oil analysis insight


Throughout the trial period, engine and oil conditions were monitored using Mobil Serv Lubricant Analysis , a technical service that can provide early detection of any engine-component failure and lube contamination and ultimately prevent unplanned maintenance.

As AEP increased oil drain intervals, oil samples were tested on a monthly basis. Results from these tests provided assurance that Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 was continuing to provide optimal protection.
